RESEARCH SOURCES

The Sixth Form Study has a good supply of Media textbooks. The media department have some books but do not provide you with a set text.

You must get into the habit of being resourceful and look beyond the Sixth Form resources. Stratford and East Ham Libraries are good, as several libraries outside Newham. The British Film Institute Library at 21 Stephen Street in central London ha the best research resources for film and television. You will need to pay an inexpensive day membership to use the library.

You must also get into the habit of regularly reading a broadsheet newspaper. The Guardian on a Monday has an excellent media supplement and on Saturdays the Weekend supplement is a good source. The Independent on a Thursday is also good.

Media Class

There are also many media magazines you should buy in regular basis particularly those concerning film. Sight and Sound is the most ‘high brow’ and academic but Empire, Hotdog and Total Film are also useful. The Internet has become the favourite research tool for most but must be used correctly by students otherwise it is useless. Simply downloading information from the net without reading or understanding it in your own words is futile. Some websites are not always relevant, whilst some are.

Media Editing Suite

Media Studies is a critical subject therefore you must cast your opinions aside and study texts objectively. The best media study students are independent thinkers as well as learners. It is imperative that you read around the subject, consume yourself in the media and take an interest outside of what we teach you in the syllabus. This should make you a more-well rounded and informed student of the media.

The media department is well resourced processing two analogue edit suites and one digital suite, four SVHS-C Camcorders, three combers for sound recording and two still cameras. We also have IT resources with Publisher and Photoshop.
