Unit 2730: Foundation Production (coursework)

In this unit you will make one individual practical media production: the topic set will be to create a Sunday Colour Supplement for a new Sunday Newspaper.

You will need to show evidence of planning and research, construction (original photographs, use of DTP an graphic design) and an evaluation of your work with regard to form and style and its intended audience, in the form of a 2000 word production log.

Unit 2731: Textual Analysis (Exam, 2 hours)

This unit will asses your skills in how to analyse texts using media theory.

There are two sections to this unit. Both are compulsory.

Section A of the exam will analyse a moving image extract and how it uses the technical aspects of film to create meaning:

Camera angle, shot, movement and position

  • Editing
  • Sound
  • Special Effects/Graphics
  • Mise-en-scene

Section B of the exam will ask students to demonstrate an understanding or representation, with detailed reference to at least how texts linked to the topic. Gender representation and Sitcom.

Unit 2732: Audiences and Institutions (Exam 1 hour and 30 minutes)

In this unit you will choose one ‘cross-media case study topic’ from either New Media Technologies or Media Ownership to research.

Unit 2733: Advanced Production (Coursework)

In this unit you will make a group production using the convention of film, demonstrating advanced creative practical skills. There is an accompanying 3000 words critical evaluation.

The production brief will be to create a promotional film trailer for a new film. You will need to show evidence of planning and research.

Unit 2734: Critical Research Study (Exam, 2 hours)

In this unit will carry out independent research on one media topic from a choice of 4 options. Teachers will not teach this unit, as research has to be carried out independently. This unit is preparation for the kind of research that is required at the university.

The topics are:

  • Popular Music and Youth Culture
  • Children and TV
  • Sport and the media
  • Women and Film

The research will involve investigating academic and critical perspectives on texts and their producers. Students must carry out primary and secondary research.

Unit 2735: Media Issues and Debates (Exam, 2 hours)

In this unit you will be assessed on your ability to develop critical arguments about a range of issues and debates in three mediums- broadcasting, film and print publishing.

You will study the following topics:

  • British Television Soap Opera
  • The concept of Film Genre
  • Magazines and Gender
