The emphasis is on producing quality coursework using CAD/CAM where possible to ensure that every pupil produces a well finished object and so can gain high marks. The projects are chosen so that they provide opportunities for the girls to explore a wide range of techniques and materials, encouraging experimentation with ideas and using Computer Aided Design.

The software we use is Pro/desktop, Techsoft 2D design, Speedstep, PE design, Adobe Photoshop, Food analysis and the Microsoft Office suite of programs. The CAM work is produced on Modelas, a Conect router, cutter/plotters, computerised sewing and full colour printing machines.

The design and development work is done in year 10 with the final making timetabled for the autumn term of year 11. The focus is on quick experimentation and using a range of design techniques to inspire originality.

At the end of the year the GCSE and A-Level work is exhibited for the governors, parents, pupils and the staff to review the work of the department.

The timing of the project work is essential to be able to achieve good grades at GCSE. The pupils start the GCSE work at the end of year nine, when they select their option. In year 10 we spend the first term on focused practical tasks that relate to the work they will be expected to include in their main project. At this stage they can produce work related to the manufacturing processes that can be included in their project later.

By the time they start the project at Christmas the pupils have most of the plan for manufacture complete and it is then important to manage the production of ideas by modelling as much as possible and photographing the development as it happens.

With constant monitoring and chasing the practical work is the focus of year 11. With interruptions for revision and mock exams we hope to have the products complete by February half term, leaving time for a good evaluation and concentrated revision.
