At St. Angela’s eleven committed, enthusiastic English specialists make up the English department team. This includes HOD and 2 i/c and an AST. Our aim is to encourage every student to reach their full potential, providing pleasurable, effective, varied contexts for the teaching and learning of English. The department meets regularly as part of the school meeting cycle, and we view this as a crucial opportunity to discuss new initiatives, make future plans, share good practice and resources and focus on student’s work.

RESOURCES

The department is well resourced. All English lessons take place in specialist classrooms which we believe should be stimulating learning environments. There is an English office area with an extensive range of teacher and student resources. The development of Media Studies has allowed us to build up an extensive library of video and audio-visual resources, which can be used at KS3 and 4. In addition to the excellent whole school ICT facilities we have 12 computers solely for English. We also have strong links with the school library, which has well stocked fiction and non-fiction shelves as well as a good selection of CD –ROMS, and access to the internet – all of which complement our curriculum.

The department is fully committed to using ICT in English in meaningful and effective ways. We currently have one electronic white board in the department.

CURRICULUM

All students in years 7-10 have 3 hours of English per week and 4 hours in Year 11. English is taught in sets and all girls are entered for GCSE English and GCSE Literature (AQA). There is a department scheme of work on the school’s intranet, including units on prose, poetry, non-fiction and media, Shakespeare, and drama. At Key Stage Three we teach the National Framework for literacy through these units of work using the recommended 4 part lesson methodology. ICT skills and library skills have been integrated into these units. We aim to provide an innovative, challenging curriculum enabling all students to develop communication and literacy skills and giving access to a wide variety of texts.

In the Years 10 and 11 you will continue to develop your skills in spoken and written English. You will also read and study a wide variety o fiction, drama and poetry.

You will be entered for two GCSE subjects, English and English Literature, and some of the work which you do in class and for homework will be marked as part of your final grade.

In English, you will produce several pieces of your own imaginative or factual writing. You will also be graded for spoken English. In English Literature, you will read at least one Shakespeare play, as well as books by modern authors. You will write coursework essays and take written examinations at the end of Year 11.
