All students in years 7-10 have 3 hours of English per week and 4 hours in Year 11. English is taught in sets and all girls are entered for GCSE English and GCSE Literature (AQA). There is a department scheme of work on the school’s intranet, including units on prose, poetry, non-fiction and media, Shakespeare, and drama. At Key Stage Three we teach the National Framework for literacy through these units of work using the recommended 4 part lesson methodology. ICT skills and library skills have been integrated into these units. We aim to provide an innovative, challenging curriculum enabling all students to develop communication and literacy skills and giving access to a wide variety of texts.
In the Years 10 and 11 you will continue to develop your skills in spoken and written English. You will also read and study a wide variety o fiction, drama and poetry.
You will be entered for two GCSE subjects, English and English Literature, and some of the work which you do in class and for homework will be marked as part of your final grade.
In English, you will produce several pieces of your own imaginative or factual writing. You will also be graded for spoken English. In English Literature, you will read at least one Shakespeare play, as well as books by modern authors. You will write coursework essays and take written examinations at the end of Year 11.
