Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at St Angela’s School

Now fully established, St Angela’s School runs successful Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards at all three levels of, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The Bronze Award is open to all Year 10 girls as an extra-curricular option. Expedition / exploration training takes place after school and during lunchtimes in areas such as navigation and camp-craft skills. This prepares the candidates for a Day Walk in Epping Forest in February, a practice expedition in Essex in May and a qualifying expedition weekend in Kent in June. Girls participate in a whole variety of activities for their other three sections (Skill, Service and Physical Recreation). In the past girls have participated in debating, playing badminton, going to the gym, learning a language, assisting at local Brownie clubs, caring for a pet and completing their Sports or Dance Leaders Award.

After all sections have been completed girls can choose whether they would like to also participate in the Silver Award. At this level (when girls are in Year 11) the expedition is over three days and two nights and takes place in more rural areas (The South Downs and the Chilterns). The expeditions for the Silver level are organized for the September of their Year 11 leaving the remaining time free for completion of the other sections of the Award and academic studies.

Once Silver has been completed and girls have entered the Sixth Form, the Gold Award is open as an option for them. Completing a Gold Award has five sections to complete and takes over 18 months to fulfill. Expeditions and explorations take place in the Brecon Beacons in Wales with MW Guiding Services and is a huge achievement to complete.

Presentations of the Gold Award are made at Buckingham Palace.
