AS and A2 (Double Award) Health & Social Care                                

Length of course: 2 years.
Entry requirements:
4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or a GNVQ

Intermediate qualification with Merit or Distinction.

What will I learn on the course?
You will take 12 modules covering such areas as:

  • Sociological and psychological influences on behaviour
  • The physiological and biological basis of health and illness
  • The role of exercise and diet in maintaining health and fitness
  • Equal opportunities
  • Research methods
  • Complementary Therapies
  • Early Years care
  • Early years physical and cognitive development
  • Adult and Elderly Care and Communication
  • The Structure and Funding of Health and Social Care Provision
  • Environmental health
  • Social policy

Due to the diverse content of the course, it is delivered by a range of teaching staff from a variety of academic backgrounds including specialist science and social science teachers. Study for an additional AS/A2 Level alongside the course is advisable - sociology & psychology both complement the course.

There is a strong emphasis on work experience in this course and you will be given the opportunity to visit a number of care and health facilities.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is based on assignments in the form of project work based on experience and analysis of health and social care settings (usually undertaken during work experience) and written examinations.

What career prospects will I have?

You can progress on to Higher Education, or into community work, nursing, housing services, welfare, occupational therapy, social work or childcare.
