The A-level work focuses on the use of CAD/CAM in the making of products. The students need to understand industrial scale manufacturing techniques and apply them to their design work.
In Year 12 the students design a hand-held product and look in detail at the design of the construction in relation to manufacturing, specifically injection moulding techniques. Initial designs are quickly modelled using a range of materials including card, Plasticine and polymorph.
Using Pro/Desktop as one of the design tools the students explore a range of design ideas and model them using a Modela milling machine. The designs can then be tested ergonomically and aesthetically and improvements made.
The final designs can now be realised by using the rapid prototype machine in the CTLC.
2D work is developed using software such as Photoshop and Corel Draw to produce quality printed posters, flyers or point of sale displays.
In Year 13 the projects are focused on architectural opportunities that are connected to the local environment. The images shown are shop front designs that have been created for a new mall in Green Street, a popular local shopping area.
Each student designed their own shop, under the guidance of a client and all the shops were fitted together to create the new mall.
In 2004 the project will focus on providing facilities for the London Olympic bid.
Each student designs a corporate identity for their shop design.
