Art at GCSE builds on the skills and experiences developed over KS3. Successful students at this level need to combine their skills, interests and enthusiasm with hard work and commitment. Both basic and new skills are built upon through classroom practice and through homework assignments. The sketchbooks, also known as journals, will record your development and experimentation with ideas, as well as your research into the work of artists and designers. These books are looked at in detail as part of your final grade for GCSE. The art studios are available at lunchtimes and after school in study support sessions in order to complete coursework assignments with the extra help of your teachers.

Central to each project assignment will be strong element of observational drawing, which will be used as a springboard to enable students to explore and develop their own more personal and/or imaginative ideas. Students visual literacy will improve alongside their growing ability to work and learn independently, as their  confidence in their own ideas. The ability to see, record, work need to be documented, as they will be assessed as part of the coursework.

The work of artists, designers and imagery from a range of cultures will play an integral role in the individual progress of the students in order that they can put their work into a larger context of the world around them, both past and present.

The GCSE course involves students in a range of two and three-dimensional practices, built upon a strong drawing foundation and ranging from painting and printing to clay and mixed media construction work. Both of the major coursework projects will require a depth of investigation and at least one final outcome. The final terminal practical exam, set in the Spring term of year 11, will require students to demonstrate a more personal and independent level of enquiry and research, illustrating the practical and thinking skills they have developed over the duration of the course. The development work needs to be produced in journals and possibly on larger sheets over a six-week period, before the 10-hour final practical piece of work is undertaken in exam conditions.
