The Art department plays a prominent role in the life of St. Angela's School. It is a lively and vigourous department and Art and Design is a popular option at GCSE and A level. Students are offered a broad curriculum with a solid fine art base. At Key Stage 3 there is a strong emphasis on drawing and painting which develops naturally into other art disciplines of printmaking, three dimensional work, graphics and textiles. In all areas we recognise the importance of incorporating the work of other artists, both contemporary and historic, so developing children's understanding of Art and Design.

We have forged strong links with outside agencies including galleries, colleges of art, graphic studios and individual artists. We have developed particularly strong links with The Whitechapel Art Gallery and Goldsmith’s College and been involved in high profile projects resulting in the exhibition of our students’ works in The Hayward Gallery and UEL Gallery University of East London.

As a department we value the importance of children working alongside practising artists. Recently Lesley Dave, Printmaker worked on a long term residency with Sixth formers exploring student’s responses to the environment through printmaking. The Royal Academy of Arts Outreach programme is a popular feature of the sixth form programme of study for A level students. A tutor from the Royal Academy visits the school and runs a one day life drawing work shop for A level students. Gallery visits are an essential feature of most courses and this year we also participated in The Open Studio event in East London. There students met the internationally renewed artist Sebestian Boyle and one of the Year 10 students through a dart and selected the site for his next work.

As a part of the East London Partnership we have been involved in long term contextual studies projects in collaboration with the University of East London, The Hayward Gallery and The Whitechapel Gallery. The department plays an active role in The Newham Art Teachers Network and every year exhibits student’s work in the London Borough of Newham Summer Show. This year the high quality of our student work was recognised through selection of their work for exhibition at The DFEE Conference for Gifted and Talented students held in Birmingham.

The department has a number of years been involved in Goldsmith’s University of London PGCE Secondary Art and Design Partnership and this involvement in the mentoring of Beginning teachers not only keeps us up abreast with current developments in art education but it extends the variety of teaching which we can offer students.
