Structure and organisation of P.E. curriculum delivery

All pupils follow the programmes of study outlined by the National Curriculum at KS 3 + 4.

In KS3 pupils in Yr. 7 + 9 have two 1 hr lessons per week for the entire year. Year 8 pupils, however, have 1.5 hrs of PE per week over the course of the year. They have 1 hour per week throughout Year 8 and attend a second 1-hour lesson per week within a creative carousel for half of the year.

In KS4 pupils attend a single 80-minute lesson every week.

The KS4 curriculum is run as an option programme. This programme offers pupils the opportunity to study two chosen areas of activity in more depth over the autumn term of Year 10 and then again over the autumn term in Year 11. The remaining activities covered over the two-year programme are also option based and aim to heighten pupils’ awareness of local resources, faculties and opportunities available to them. The Junior Sports Leader Award course is also offered within the programme and viewed as a valuable part of the KS4 curriculum.

All pupils are offered, and enabled to participate in, a broad varied curriculum with a solid base in Games, Athletics, Gymnastics, and Dance.

The department also offers GSCE PE and GCSE Dance through the option programme at the end of Year 9.

Extra Curricular Programme

The Department is committed to the delivery of a full extracurricular timetable for both clubs and teams, with an active involvement in borough, local, and regional competitions.

The department has established, maintained and continuously encourages the development of networks, liaisons and partnerships with primary schools, other secondary schools, outside agencies and facilities within the borough. Newham and East Ham Leisure centres, Stratford Judo club, West Ham United, University of East London, National Athletics, New Vic 6th Form College and the Rambert Dance Company are among our many contacts.

Outreach Links, Primary and Secondary

The Department has successfully been involved in the Schools Sports Co-ordinator Project over the last four years and is entering into the next phase of the programme.

The Department has been awarded the Sportsmark Award for Excellence in P.E. and extra curricular provision as well the Challenge Funding Award from the Sports Council.

Pupils are offered, and enabled to participate in, a broad and varied curriculum with a solid base in Games, and including Athletics, Gymnastics, and Dance
