Intermediate Health and Social Care

Course Description

 GNVQ Advanced Science is a two-year full time course that follows the City and Guild specifications. The course aims to provide students with a practical grounding in science to prepare them for higher education or science based employment. Students study applied aspects of biology, chemistry and physics, including ecology, materials science, analytical chemistry, human biology, healthcare and biotechnology. Most of the  teaching for the course will take place in a purpose built laboratory at St Angela's, which has excellent facilities, including computers with access to the Internet. Key elements of the course will include visits to places of scientific interest, a series of talks by speakers from science-based employers, a field course at a local environmental centre and a two week work experience placement.

 GNVQ Advanced Science is an excellent qualification for enabling students to continue study at institutes of higher education, or to enter employment within a science field. An advanced GNVQ Science qualification will enable a student to gain entry onto a science degree course. Possible employment options include laboratory technicians in hospitals or research institutes, forensic work or the engineering industry to name but a few.

Main Areas of Study

 It is proposed that for September 2000, students will be required to:

  • Study three generic science units in a vocational context emphasising scientific skills assessed through their portfolio work;
  • Study a physics, chemistry and biology unit, all of which must be externally assessed.

 The course will be made up of twelve units of study (6 mandatory and 6 optional), which have key skills integrated into them.

 The six mandatory units are as follows:

  • Investigating science at work;
  • Monitoring the activity of the human body;
  • Controlling chemical processes;
  • Preparing pure compounds;
  • Managing energy;
  • Carrying out scientific investigations.

 There will be six optional units which have yet to be decided, but will be chosen to reflect student ability and career choices.

Entry Requirements

 The basic entry requirements are 4 grade C GCSE passes or a merit or  distinction for GNVQ Intermediate Science. We would like to see for Science  and Maths, at least grade C GCSE passes. In addition to this we expect to see a commitment to the course through good attendance and the ability to meet deadlines.
