Post-16 Chemistry at St Angela's
As from September 2000, according to the new specifications, we will be offering a full A-level course in Chemistry running over two years and a one year AS-level chemistry course.
Chemistry is taught across the two sites of St Angela's and St Bonaventure's by Mr Farley, Mr Maxfield and Mr Casey at St Bonaventure's and by Mr Clift at St Angela's.
For a full breakdown of the content of the syllabus, you can visit the homepage of the Edexcel exam board (although you need Adobe Acrobat in order to view these documents) but here is a quick overview of what the students are studying now in years 12 and 13:
Year 12
Year 13
Lots of the information relevant to the course is to be found on the Edexcel Web site, but I have put together some of the most important pieces of information and especially those points that differ from the course of previous years. (i.e. those things that older students might not be able to help you with so easily!). One of the most important things to be aware of is what is exactly contained within the A or AS-level syllabus. These have been mapped into a scheme. The four different assessment objectives have different weightings in the two courses and you can find more information on these objectives here. Key Skills are something you will hear a lot about during the course and you should see how they are mapped into your studies. If you would like to know what depth of knowledge is typical of a student aiming for an A, C or E grade at A-Level then you will find these grade descriptions useful. Textbooks are a thorny issue at a post-16 level and it is easy to spend a very large amount of money on texts that are of only limited use. Check out the suggested list from the exam board.
Two more useful reference pages are firstly a list of word definitions as they are understood by the exam board. Secondly, the mathematical requirements of the AS and A-level course (especially useful for those who are not doing maths post-16.)
