It was an opportunity for us to gain a well-informed insight into a variety of different industries and possible future careers. The whole point was to give us ideas and hopefully help us in our GCSE choices, & was scheduled the 'day' before picking our subjects. I really enjoyed it because the different industries were all well explained. There were also some industries that I never thought about that really caught my attention.

Some of the industries that spoke to us included: Banking, Publishing, Town Planning, Banking, Accounting, Law, Catering, Nursing, Medicine & Fashion.

It was a fun & interesting day and I'm now really interested in pursuing publishing as a future career.

A week filled with fun. How can this be? Anti-bullying week 2011 of course! Girls from all years came together to stand as one in our spree to stamp our bullying.

On the week beginning Monday the 14th of November girls from every year came to enjoy the events happening in our school, and all to promote anti-bullying. The anti-bulling alliance (ABA) planned the week thoroughly. Some planned events including Friends for change, an anti-bullying fair, a wear something blue day and even a flash mob!

Friends for change, an event designed to encourage students to make new friends and get to know each other. The aim of the game was to also meet new people in other year groups. What made it more fun was that it was moulded to be speed friending instead of speed dating. So basically a fast, fun way to make new friends. The anti-bullying alliance was surprised to welcome girls from years 7 all the way up to year 10. Even our event leaders (Alicia Jordan and Daljit Kaur, 10 Dench) made new friends, the event was definitely a success. With an excellent turn out, it was a lunchtime to remember.

On Thursday of that week the anti-bullying alliance presented a flash mob! Of course being a flash mob it came as a surprise however there were many rumours circulating around school about an alleged “milking of a cow” taking place that lunchtime. Because of this a lot of students and teachers were milling around Brescia and Merici court that afternoon. One crowd got so impatient they started to chant for the cow. Luckily the flash mob was soon underway. It was certainly a lively atmosphere. The ABA team doing a dance to Queens smash hit “Under pressure”. In the excitement a lot of spectators decided to join in and learn the dance (choreographed by Yvonne Gyamfi, 10 McKewan). Most spectators stated that it was a hilarious event. A filmed version (recorded by Khiera Odle, 10 Sawalha) will soon be on the MLE for any girls who missed the event.

The last event we had was the much anticipated anti-bullying fair. On this day we also organised a wear something blue day. This was to wear accessories and little items just to silently support anti-bullying. There were many girls who wore blue head bands and flowers or blue shoelaces however one girl came in dressed in a blue wig! The fair was another success story. With many fun activities such as blue nail painting and ice your own blue anti-bullying cakes. Also girls who came to the event got complimentary face paint. They would get either a ribbon or a symbol on their face or hands. All blue of course! Mr Johnson also popped in to get a ribbon on his hand. Face painter Maria Charmaine Nadarajah said, “I’m just glad I didn’t mess up”. The cakes went really well as well. Clearly we have many budding artists in our school as the cupcakes looked excellent and tasted just as good. Also the nail-painting was excellent with many girls coming in to get their nails done. Nail painter Marianna Marcelline (10 Dench) stated, “I can’t believe how many people have come to support anti-bullying!”

The week was, overall, very eventful and was a joyous celebration. A big thank you from the ABA team to anyone who came or took part in the events to promote anti-bullying & to Ms Peacock. We couldn’t have done it without you!

in order to promote a more positive representation of young black
British people are The London Schools and the Black Child Awards hosted
by Labour MP Diane Abbott and held in the Houses of Parliament.

We are proud to say that between St Angela’s and St Bonaventure’s we
absolutely DOMINATED the nominations this year and although no prizes
were given to our students we had the HIGHEST grade results and FIVE
runners up, the largest number of nominations for any London School. It
was great to celebrate their success and have the British Government
recognise the brilliant young people within London Schools. We would
like to congratulate and celebrate our amazing nominees: Janet Talabi,
Maaeme Eshun, Karmen Marie Parker, Christopher Achiampong and Anthony
Enyioma.
Angela's and St Bonaventure's 6th Form Centre have been raising money to
take part in World Challenge: Project Uganda.
In total the 8 students that took part raised over £24,000 to cover all
the costs of the project , accommodation , food, and transport.
We set off for Kampala on the 6th of July and returned on the 29th of
July. We explored Western Uganda and followed the Buwata Comminty Trail
through the foothills of the Ruwenzori Mountains for the first 4 days of
our trip.
We then spent eleven days at Rumuri Primary school, which is situated in
Bunyarugulu, where our tasks were to complete an unfinished class room
block and Library. It was a great opportunity to meet and work with the
local community.
After our hard work doing manual labour and teaching classes ranging
from 45 - 90 students, we had a well deserved treat with a Safari at
Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Andrea Harvey

Director of Pastoral Care, St Angela's Ursuline School

Our first week in Uganda started off with mainly settling
in and acclimatising. We were in rwenzori when we climbed our first
mountain! It was a long trek so we spent the night with the locals up on
the mountain -having a good sing-along to end the night.
The second was a day trek. It was ever-so steep so it meant we stumbled
up and down the mountain. Meeting interesting locals like bongo man and
sele made each trek that much more exciting.
On the second week we went to Rumuri school where we finished the
building of a new school block and taught a few lessons which I must say
was the best part! Teaching science, english, maths and PE to kids from
the ages of about 7 to 18, some of the class sizes were huge. Josh
taught a PE class to 90 children! The school gave us a magical send off
putting on performances and a reception lunch.
Our final few days were an much needed period of rest and relaxation. We
went on safari and a boat trip and saw the best wildlife uganda has to
offer, we then went back to Entebe where we bought gifts and ate out in
fancy restraunts like the Gately and China garden.
Finally departure day came and we packed up and said goodbye to Uganda
getting our adjoining flight from Kenya. I'd like to again thank both
Miss Harvey and Miss Mcwalter for putting up with us and our expedition
leader Piers.

This is the second year that St Angela's has been involved with the
Debate Mate Programme and we are extremely proud to announce that we
have just won the Debate Mate Cup!

Mentors from our 6th form and London universities have been coming into
school each Thursday after school in order to train girls from years 8
-10 how to debate. We have entered several Debate Mate League
competitions this year and in April we won one of the London rounds of
the Debate Mate Cup held at the London School of Economics.

On Wednesday 29th June St Angela's was, therefore, in the finals of the
Debate Mate Cup against the winners of the London rounds, as well as
those from Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham. 120 schools and
approximately 1500 pupils had entered the competition and we had reached
the final 8. It was an extremely close fought competition held at The
Royal Institute of Great Britian in Mayfair. The final was chaired by
David Milliband in front of a VIP audience.
It's a fabulous achievement for the girls, their mentors and the school.

The Northampton school was a good match size-wise for the St Angela’s team. However although they were a match in size, they found it very hard to deal with the speed (offensively & defensively) of the girls from East London.

In the U14 Girls final St Angela's walked away as champions as they beat Priestnall School from Manchester. We out sized and out ran the school from Manchester and got off to a great start in the first quarter, every so often the Priestnall school would make a surge to comeback into the game but St Angela’s always had an answer to their attempt, like Brenda Kipewu shooting a three pointer or Camille Francis or Amber Byrne scoring off a fast break. The game ended with a 68-50 win. Brenda Kipewu of St Angela's was awarded the MVP as she contributed 27 points in the final.

St Angela’s got to the finals by beating teams from West, South & Central London) during that day.
In the final the St Angela’s team was trailing the whole game against a very confident (3 times National Champions) Grieg City School. By the fourth quarter St Angela’s looked like they had no more to give, but with 2 mins left in the game after a last ditch time out moral boast from PE teacher Miss Charles, Brenda Kipewu got a second wind and stole the ball passed to Camille Francis who scored, then Brenda stole the ball again and this time scored herself also being fouled in the process. The game was now tied and Brenda scored her foul shot, putting St Angela’s ahead by 1 Grieg City then lost their cool and turned the ball over once again and St Angela’s converted the turn-over into a 3 point lead. Grieg City manage to get the ball to the Basket scoring, but still leaving St Angela’s ahead by 1 solitude point with 30 seconds left in the game. Brenda put up a shot that missed, Grieg City charged to their basket with the ball and Evelyn Adebayo fouled their shooter to put Grieg City on the line for 2 shots and the possibility of winning the game with 9 seconds to go. With our hearts in our mouths we watched as Grieg City missed the first shot and then the second, Evelyn grabbed the rebound, Brenda held the ball as the 9 seconds ticked away and St Angela’s pulled off a shock defeat over the reigning National Champions for 3 years. Final Score 31-30

St Angela’s are now:

1. Newham School Borough Champions

2. East London Schools Champions

3. London Schools Champions

4. UK Schools Champions

Now the only Basketball title St Angela’s don’t have is the National Schools Champions. This title will be contested for on the 8th May 2011 in Nottingham

(And we will be there battling for that title as well!)

Drama in the Mix

Three of our students were successful in a script writing competition
orgainsed by BBC Radio London and Rich Mix in Shoreditch. The writers
were Alicia Jordan (Year 9), Daljit Sharee (Year 9) and Deborah
Ehinmonorin (Year 8). Their brief was to write a five minute radio drama
linked to the themes of London 2012. Their script was selected from
over eighty entries and performed by the students alongside 6 other
plays at a live event on Wednesday 16th March. Natalie Mofus (Year 10)
and Luke Davies (Year 12) took on other roles in the play and also
created the sound effects! The final script was developed over a three
month period and the students received professional mentoring as part of
this process. The live event was attended by students from all five
Olympic boroughs and there was a panel of experts who gave the students
some valuable and extremely complimentary feedback about their work. The
panel included Baroness King of Bow, Jeremy Mortimer (BBC Drama
Executive Producer) and Tim Farr, a Paralympian (British Disabled Ski
Team). This was an extraordinary achievement and two of the writers were
interviewed on the day by a BBC news reporter.

The award from the Specialist Schools and Academies trust was marked at a celebratory event on March 16th in Central London.

"These results show the commitment and hard work of teachers and students in schools across the country. They demonstrate the power of high expectations, good teaching and the ambition for every young person to get the qualifications they need to have the best possible choices of career or education in later life." Specialist Schools and Academies Trust

Angela's Basketball team went into the final with only one thought in
their heads. We wanted to get to the London finals this year. Having
lost that privilege last year to Barking Abbey
by 1 point there was no way that we wanted to miss out this year.

In St Angela's pool we had
to play Abbs Cross, Bishop Challenor, Haber Dashers Aske. The girls beat
every team and went into the semi-finals against our nemesis Barking
Abbey. The St Angela's team went into the game
with the passion that there could only be one result. Barking Abbey did
not have a reply to St Angel's fast pace game and we won the game by a
huge margin of 20 points. The final was against Chadwell Heath although
Chadwell Heath tried their best to contain
the charging St Angela's team, there was nothing that they could do to
stop the St Angela's team from claiming their rightful place in the
London Finals.

by KAY ATWAL and LEE PEART (from the Stratford & Newham Express)

Budding entrepreneurs at two Forest Gate schools have won a business prize. Sixth form pupils from St. Angela's and St. Bonaventure's won the Best Company Report award at the Young Enterprise Company Programme awards at Credit Suisse in Canary Wharf.

Karen McWalter, business studies teacher and senior tutor at St. Angela's, said: "I am extremely proud of what the students have achieved. They showed great dedication and learnt a lot of skills that will be useful in the future and hopefully help them become budding entrepreneurs."

The Young Enterprise Programme is a charity-run scheme that aims to develop business skills. Running over an academic year, the project gives young people practical experience of business by teaching them how to set up their own company.

Pupils learn how to raise money to fund their business, and design and make a product or service to sell to the public.

They elected a board, raised share capital, marketed their brand and found finances.

The pupils, who formed a company called 6th Sense, created a book that offers advice to children on how to cope with bullying at school.

Shanice Asare, 17, managing director of 6th Sense, said the team raised more than £100 through doughnut sales and a school fashion show to pay for the book's production, The pupils now intend to sell their book directly to secondary schools.

St. Angela's celebrate Book Week

The Book Week is a week set aside for staff and students to celebrate our love of reading and books in fun ways, and hopefully inspire those who are not great lovers of books.

A number of activities took place in the TLC and around the school during the week; book fair, book tombola, “Body in the Library” murder mystery, guess which literary character is coming to dinner, Chinese calligraphy, creating MFL miniature books and writing international poetry.

We were very lucky to have the children’s author Echo Freer visit the school and talk to students in years 7 to 9. The students enjoyed hearing about the many books she has written.

As part of our World Book Day celebrations the TLC held a lunch time Book Quiz as well as a very enjoyable session where the whole school dropped pens and bunsen burners and everyone read.

For everyone, the highlight of Book Week is Book Character Day when staff and students come to school dressed as a character from a book..

I am very pleased to inform you that the inspectors found St. Angela’s outstanding under every single category of their inspection.

I would like to thank publically Mr Paul McCarthy and his RE department (Miss Vasilliou, Miss Kerridge, Miss Afonso and Miss Buonocore) for their outstanding work in the school and particular thanks to the student body, who as ever shone so well in reflecting the spirit of Serviam within the school.
